But can they all live together?

The answer, as with many things in the aquarium hobby, is: it depends. More importantly, that answer follows a framework. Once you understand it, making future stocking decisions becomes much simpler.

Fish compatibility isn't based on chance, luck, or guesswork. And once you understand the variables involved, it isn't especially complicated either. The same four questions can be applied to virtually every species combination you consider. If the answers align, the combination has a good chance of working. If they don't, the setup is unlikely to succeed, regardless of how carefully you intend to manage it.

The consequences of choosing incompatible fish can be serious. They may not simply ignore one another; they can cause stress, injury, or even predation. Long-term stress weakens immune function, increases vulnerability to disease, and can reduce lifespan. In a community aquarium, an unsuitable combination can affect the stability of the entire tank, not just the species involved.

When compatibility is planned correctly, the result can be genuinely beautiful: multiple species occupying different areas of the aquarium, displaying natural behaviours, and creating a layered, living ecosystem that makes people pause and admire the tank.

The Four Compatibility Pillars: How to Evaluate Any Combination

Every fish combination should be assessed using four essential pillars. Think of them as four filters that a potential community must pass. For long-term success, all four need to work together.

Pillar 1: Water Parameters

Fish have evolved to live within particular water conditions, including temperature, pH, and hardness. Although many aquarium species can tolerate a reasonable range around their preferred conditions, some combinations have requirements that overlap too little to create a suitable shared environment.

Temperature is the most immediately important parameter. Tropical fish such as neon tetras, guppies, and corydoras generally require 24–28°C. Goldfish, on the other hand, are cold-water fish that do best at 15–22°C. These two groups should not be housed together. The temperature suitable for goldfish can place tropical fish under stress, while the warmer conditions preferred by tropical fish can negatively affect goldfish health and lifespan. pH becomes especially important when keeping sensitive species. Hardness follows a similar principle. Tap water in many Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, tends to be medium-hard to hard. This is well suited to livebearers such as guppies, platies, and mollies, as well as African cichlids and goldfish. It is less suitable for soft-water Amazonian species, although hardier tetras and corydoras may adapt. Territorial fish: Most cichlids, particularly during breeding, establish and defend territories. This doesn't automatically exclude them from community aquariums, but it does mean the tank must provide enough space for territories to exist without constant conflict.

Predatory fish: Oscars, flowerhorns, larger cichlids, and arowana may eat any fish small enough to fit inside their mouths. This is not necessarily aggression in the usual sense; it is feeding behaviour. The rule is straightforward: if a fish can fit into a predator's mouth, it may eventually become prey.

Aggressive-to-own-species fish: Male bettas are a well-known example, although several cichlid species also display this behaviour. A male betta can often live in a community with peaceful tetras and corydoras. Two male bettas, however, should never be housed together, regardless of tank size, because they are likely to fight.

Practical rule: Match temperament levels carefully. Keep peaceful species with peaceful species, and pair semi-aggressive fish with tankmates capable of handling their behaviour. Never combine predators with prey-sized fish, and don't assume a peaceful species can defend itself against an aggressive one simply because the aquarium is large.

Pillar 3: Size and Predation

Size differences are related to temperament but represent a separate compatibility concern. Even species that aren't naturally aggressive can create a predation risk when one is considerably larger than the other.

A fully grown angelfish measuring around 15cm may not be aggressive, but it can still eat a 2cm neon tetra because that tetra resembles the size of its natural prey. A 5cm tetra alongside a 15cm fish is already borderline. A 2cm shrimp with a 12cm fish is likely to be viewed as food.

A well-designed community aquarium makes use of the entire water column: the surface, middle, and bottom. However, fish that occupy the same area can sometimes compete for territory, food, or dominance, even when they are otherwise peaceful.

Surface zone: Bettas, gouramis, hatchetfish, and livebearers. Bettas and gouramis are both labyrinth fish that breathe air at the surface, and they may become territorial towards one another, especially in smaller aquariums.

Bottom zone: Corydoras, loaches, plecos, and most catfish. Different bottom-dwelling species generally coexist peacefully. Corydoras and bristlenose plecos, for example, share the same general area but use it differently and rarely compete directly.

The zoning strategy: A tank that deliberately includes one or two suitable surface species, one or two mid-water schooling species, and a bottom-dwelling species can create a visually balanced and behaviourally stable community. Add the most assertive species last.
