Most fish losses after purchase happen not during transport, but within the first 48 hours after the fish is introduced to a new aquarium. In many cases, the main causes are rushed acclimation, skipped quarantine, or allowing transport water to enter the main tank. This guide explains what fish experience during transport, why the basic ten-minute floating method is not always sufficient, how to use the drip and modified floating methods, and what to do during the first week to help new fish settle safely.

You may have done everything correctly. Your aquarium is cycled, the water is clean, and the parameters appear suitable. You bring a fish home from the shop in a bag, float it in the aquarium for ten minutes as you were advised, release it, and then find the fish dead two days later.

What went wrong?

In many cases, the problem is acclimation. Introducing a fish to new water is one of the most underestimated steps in aquarium keeping. It is often treated as a simple formality, even though it is one of the most significant physiological transitions a fish experiences after purchase. When done correctly, fish can begin settling within hours, start eating within a day, and regain their colour within a week. When done incorrectly, even healthy fish can struggle or die after arriving home.

This guide explains what happens inside a fish during transport and acclimation, why the basic ten-minute floating method may not be enough, and which step-by-step techniques can help improve the transition.


What Happens to a Fish During Transport

To understand why acclimation is important, you first need to understand what a fish experiences between the aquarium shop and your home. By the time you begin floating the transport bag, the fish may already be under considerable stress.

Ammonia accumulates in the bag. Fish continuously release ammonia as waste. In a sealed transport bag without biological filtration, there is no effective system to remove it. Even during a 30-minute journey, ammonia levels in the bag water can rise noticeably. During a two-hour journey, which is common when ordering fish online or purchasing from a distant supplier, ammonia may reach levels that can begin damaging the fish’s gills.

pH drops. Carbon dioxide released through fish respiration builds up inside the sealed bag. As it dissolves into the water, it lowers the pH. This can temporarily reduce ammonia toxicity because ammonia is less toxic at a lower pH. However, when the fish is transferred into a higher-pH aquarium, the ammonia can suddenly become more toxic, creating an additional risk during introduction.

Temperature fluctuates. The fish may experience temperature changes while moving from the shop to the transport bag, then to a vehicle, and finally into your home. Fish are cold-blooded, so changes in temperature directly affect their metabolism and require their bodies to adjust.

Oxygen depletes. A sealed transport bag contains a limited oxygen supply. By the time the fish reaches your home, the dissolved oxygen in the bag may be considerably lower than the oxygen level in a well-aerated aquarium.

The fish has been dealing with all four stress factors at the same time. As a result, it may arrive at your aquarium already physiologically stressed before acclimation even begins.

Why the Ten-Minute Float Isn’t Enough

The instruction to “float the bag for ten minutes” is better than releasing the fish immediately. It helps equalise temperature, but it does not address three of the four major stress factors created during transport.

Floating the sealed bag allows the water inside it to gradually reach a temperature closer to that of the aquarium. This is useful, but it does not resolve the following issues:

Ammonia in the bag water: Ammonia remains elevated during the floating process and can enter your aquarium when the bag is opened and its water is released.

pH differential: If the pH of the bag water has fallen during transport while the aquarium has a higher pH, releasing the fish directly can expose it to a sudden pH change. This shift may be more stressful than the transport itself.

The stress of transition: Even when the temperature is matched, the change from the bag’s water chemistry to the aquarium’s chemistry creates an important osmotic and chemical adjustment for the fish.

Ten minutes of floating is only a basic starting point. For many fish, especially sensitive species or fish that have spent a long time in transport, a slower and more gradual acclimation process can provide a safer transition.


The Two Acclimation Methods: When to Use Each

Method 1: The Drip Acclimation Method for Sensitive and Invertebrate Species

Drip acclimation is the more thorough method and is recommended for shrimp, snails, invertebrates, discus, cardinal tetras, and fish that have been in transport for more than one hour.

What you need: A clean bucket, a length of airline tubing, and a small bulldog clip or airline valve.

Step 1: Float the sealed bag for 15 minutes. Place the sealed bag in the aquarium and allow it to float. This helps equalise the temperature between the bag water and the aquarium water. Fifteen minutes instead of ten can be especially useful during Indian summers and monsoons, when temperatures may vary between the shop, vehicle, and home.

Step 2: Open the bag and transfer the fish and water into a bucket. Do not release the fish into the aquarium yet. Pour the contents of the bag, including the fish and transport water, into a clean bucket. Keep the bucket positioned below the level of the aquarium.

Step 3: Set up a drip line. Use airline tubing to create a siphon from the aquarium to the bucket. Tie a loose knot in the tubing or use an airline valve to control the flow at approximately 2–4 drips per second. This allows the fish to gradually adjust to the changing water chemistry. The process should generally take around 30–45 minutes.

Step 4: Continue dripping until the bucket volume doubles. Once the water volume in the bucket has approximately doubled, the fish will be in roughly 50% aquarium water and 50% original bag water. This is usually sufficient for most species. For particularly sensitive fish or fish that have experienced very long transport, allow the volume to triple before moving to the next step.

Step 5: Remove the fish with a net and place it in the aquarium. Never pour the bucket water directly into your aquarium. Use a small net to transfer the fish. The transport water, which may contain accumulated ammonia, pathogens from the shop, and altered water chemistry, should remain in the bucket and be discarded.

Step 6: Dim the lights for the first hour. Newly introduced fish need a low-stimulation environment while they explore their surroundings and find hiding places. Dim the aquarium lights or switch them off for 1–2 hours after introduction. Avoid feeding for 24 hours, as stressed fish may not be ready to eat, and uneaten food can add unnecessary ammonia to the aquarium.


Method 2: The Floating Bag Method for Hardy Community Fish

For hardy species such as guppies, platies, danios, mollies, and most barbs that have been in transport for less than one hour, a modified floating-bag method may be sufficient. However, it should be performed more carefully than the standard ten-minute float-and-release process.

Step 1: Float the bag for 20 minutes. This is twice the standard floating time and gives the water more time to reach a similar temperature to the aquarium.

Step 2: Add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag every five minutes. Instead of releasing the fish immediately after floating, use a small cup or syringe to add 50–100ml of aquarium water to the bag every five minutes for approximately 20–30 minutes. This gradually brings the bag’s water chemistry closer to that of the aquarium.

Step 3: Transfer the fish with a net and discard the bag water. As with drip acclimation, place the fish into the aquarium using a net. Do not pour the transport water into the tank.

Step 4: Dim the lights and avoid feeding for 12–24 hours.

The Quarantine Tank: The Step Most Hobbyists Skip

Before adding a new fish to your main aquarium, even if it looks healthy and comes from a trusted source, it should ideally spend at least two weeks in a separate quarantine tank.

A quarantine aquarium does not need to be complicated. A 20–30-litre tank with a sponge filter, heater, and a piece of pipe or small decoration for hiding is generally sufficient. The quarantine period gives you time to:

Observe for disease: Conditions such as ich, velvet, fin rot, and bacterial infections may not be visible when the fish is purchased. Symptoms can appear within 7–14 days as transport stress weakens the fish’s immune defences. Identifying a problem in quarantine helps prevent it from spreading to the main aquarium.

Treat if necessary: Treatment can be carried out without disturbing the biological filter or other inhabitants of the main tank. Allow natural recovery: A fish that has experienced transport, entered a new water environment, and gone through acclimation may not immediately be ready to handle the social activity of a community aquarium. The quarantine aquarium should follow the same acclimation process described above. The fish should be transferred from the transport bag into the quarantine tank rather than directly into the main aquarium.


Treating the Water Before Introduction

The aquarium receiving the new fish should have properly conditioned water before introduction. This is important not only because of chlorine, but also because tap-water conditions can vary across seasons in India.

After Introduction: The First Week

The first week after introduction is a critical period. Many post-purchase losses happen not during transport or acclimation, but in the days afterward, when the fish is dealing with transport stress, a new environment, and the social dynamics of a new community.

Don’t introduce new fish just before travelling or going away. The first week requires regular observation. Fish that remain unusually hidden, refuse food after 48 hours, or show early signs of illness may need attention before the problem becomes more serious.

Feed lightly during the first week. Newly introduced fish may eat less than usual. Uneaten food can increase ammonia levels at a time when the aquarium is already adjusting to the new fish. Begin with approximately half the normal feeding amount and gradually increase it as the fish starts eating normally.

Give the fish time to settle before using treatments, unless clear symptoms of disease are present.

The First Week After Introduction

4. Be patient during the first week. Feed lightly, observe carefully, and intervene when there are clear signs of disease rather than reacting to normal hiding behaviour.
