The monsoon season changes nearly every factor that influences a planted aquarium's CO2 system. Lower plant growth, shifting temperatures, frequent power interruptions, and stronger surface agitation all affect how efficiently CO2 is used and retained in the aquarium. In this final part of our CO2 Diffuser Series, we'll cover how to adjust your CO2 system during the monsoon, handle unexpected power cuts, and use liquid carbon effectively in non-pressurised aquariums.
In Part 1, we explained why CO2 is essential for healthy aquatic plants and how it affects fish. Part 2 explored the complete range of CO2 diffusers available at Aquarium Products India. This final chapter focuses on one of the biggest seasonal challenges for planted tank hobbyists across India—managing CO2 effectively during the monsoon.
If you use a pressurised CO2 setup, you'll already know that it requires routine monitoring. During the monsoon, however, normal maintenance alone isn't enough. Seasonal changes alter the conditions under which your CO2 system operates. Reduced daylight, fluctuating temperatures, unexpected power failures, and changing water conditions all influence how much CO2 your plants require, how efficiently your diffuser performs, and how safely your livestock can tolerate those changes.
Making a few timely adjustments before the monsoon begins can help your CO2 system continue performing efficiently throughout the season instead of becoming a source of instability.
How the Monsoon Changes Your CO2 Requirements
One of the first effects of the monsoon is slower plant growth, which naturally reduces the demand for CO2. As discussed in Your Aquatic Plants vs. Indian Monsoon, prolonged cloud cover decreases the amount of light reaching your aquarium. Even if your tank is illuminated with quality LED lighting, ambient daylight still contributes to the overall light intensity. Reduced light slows photosynthesis, and as photosynthesis declines, plants consume less CO2.
If you continue injecting CO2 at the same bubble rate used during the brighter months, plants won't consume it as quickly. The unused CO2 gradually accumulates in the water, potentially lowering available oxygen levels. Fish are especially vulnerable to this during the early morning hours, before photosynthesis resumes and begins replenishing oxygen.
Temperature fluctuations also influence dissolved CO2 levels. Warm water cannot retain as much dissolved CO2 as cooler water. During the monsoon, aquarium temperatures often rise during the afternoon and fall again in the evening. As a result, the same bubble rate can produce different dissolved CO2 concentrations throughout the day. Even though your bubble counter appears unchanged, the actual CO2 available to plants may be constantly shifting.
Power outages create another major challenge. A properly configured CO2 system normally starts one to two hours before the lights switch on and stops one to two hours before they turn off. When electricity fails, this schedule is interrupted. The solenoid closes, CO2 injection stops, and aquarium lighting also goes out. Once power returns, timers may resume incorrectly or the remaining photoperiod may no longer match your original CO2 schedule, affecting plant growth and overall system stability.
Surface agitation also tends to increase during the monsoon. Fans often operate for longer periods to control room temperatures, creating greater air movement across the water surface. This accelerates CO2 loss from the aquarium, meaning dissolved CO2 escapes more quickly than it would during the dry season. Even if your drop checker indicates acceptable levels, the gas may be leaving the water faster than usual. 
The Risks: CO2 Overdose and Oxygen Depletion
One of the biggest risks during the monsoon isn't an equipment failure—it's the gradual combination of excess CO2 and falling oxygen levels. The warning signs often appear only after the imbalance has already developed.
A common scenario begins with a hobbyist keeping the same CO2 bubble rate that worked perfectly during the dry season. Under bright conditions, healthy plant growth consumes most of the injected CO2. Once the monsoon arrives, however, reduced light slows photosynthesis, lowering the plants' carbon requirements. If the injection rate isn't adjusted, dissolved CO2 starts building up because the plants are no longer using it as quickly.
At the same time, slower photosynthesis means plants release less oxygen into the water. Throughout the day, dissolved oxygen levels remain lower than they would during the brighter months. After lights go out, fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria all continue to respire, consuming oxygen until morning. Since no photosynthesis is taking place overnight, oxygen levels naturally reach their lowest point just before the lights come back on.
This is why early morning is the most critical period during the monsoon. Following a cloudy day and a long night, fish may begin gathering near the surface in search of oxygen. Shrimp often become unusually inactive or cluster around the filter outlet where oxygen levels are slightly higher. In severe situations, aquarists may even discover fish losses the following morning.
Fortunately, this situation is largely preventable. As the monsoon begins, reduce your CO2 bubble rate by around 20–30% and closely observe your livestock during the first hour after the lights switch on. Fish that swim normally and begin feeding within the first thirty minutes usually indicate that oxygen levels are sufficient. If they are gasping at the surface, lingering near areas of high water movement, or showing signs of distress, reduce the CO2 immediately.
A Simple Monsoon CO2 Adjustment Protocol
Preparing your CO2 system before the season changes is much easier than correcting problems after they appear. A few straightforward adjustments can help maintain stable CO2 levels while keeping fish and plants healthy throughout the monsoon.
Reduce the bubble rate by 20–30%.
Around the beginning of June, when the monsoon typically arrives, lower your CO2 output. This compensates for reduced plant growth and prevents unnecessary CO2 accumulation while photosynthesis is naturally slower.
Monitor your drop checker every day.
During the monsoon, a drop checker becomes one of the most valuable tools for managing CO2. Because dissolved CO2 changes with both temperature and plant activity, bubble count alone doesn't tell the whole story. Checking the drop checker in both the morning and evening gives you a much clearer picture of actual CO2 levels in the aquarium.
Aim to keep the indicator green, which corresponds to roughly 20–30 ppm of dissolved CO2 during the lighting period. If it begins shifting toward blue, reassess your injection rate and make small adjustments where necessary. If it turns yellow, CO2 levels are too high. Reduce the bubble rate immediately and increase surface agitation to help release excess CO2 from the water.
Use a timer with battery backup.
Frequent power interruptions are a normal part of the monsoon in many regions. A timer equipped with battery backup keeps its programmed schedule even when electricity fails, allowing the CO2 solenoid to resume at the correct time once power is restored. This simple upgrade helps prevent timing errors that can stress both plants and livestock.
Increase surface agitation during the night.
Since oxygen levels naturally decline after lights out, improving gas exchange overnight is a worthwhile precaution. Slightly angle the filter outlet toward the surface or run a small air stone on a timer after the lights switch off. This helps remove excess CO2 while replenishing dissolved oxygen before morning.
Avoid cleaning the diffuser on water-change day.
After cleaning, ceramic diffusers often require some time before they return to peak efficiency. Performing a diffuser cleaning and a water change on the same day introduces two separate variables at once—reduced CO2 diffusion and altered water chemistry. Keeping these maintenance tasks on different days makes it easier to maintain stable CO2 levels, particularly during the more unpredictable monsoon season.
What to Do During a Power Cut
Power outages are one of the most common challenges for planted aquariums during the monsoon, especially if you're running a pressurised CO2 system. The correct response depends largely on how long the interruption lasts.
If the Power Cut Lasts Less Than 2 Hours
Short outages usually don't require any special action. The CO2 solenoid will stop injecting gas while the power is off, and plant metabolism will simply slow until electricity returns. Once power is restored, confirm that your timer is displaying the correct time and allow the system to continue operating as scheduled.
If the Power Cut Lasts Between 2 and 6 Hours
Longer interruptions need a little more attention.
When the electricity returns, avoid switching the CO2 back on immediately. Instead, allow the aquarium lights to run for about 30–60 minutes first so that photosynthesis can begin before fresh CO2 is introduced.
It's also a good idea to temporarily increase surface agitation by directing the filter outlet towards the water surface or running a powerhead near the top of the tank. This improves oxygen exchange and helps restore dissolved oxygen levels that may have fallen during the outage.
Watch your fish carefully once the system is back online. If they remain near the surface, breathe rapidly, or gather around the filter outlet, they're likely experiencing oxygen stress. In that case, continue increasing aeration and delay CO2 injection until they return to normal behaviour.
If the Power Cut Continues Overnight (More Than 6 Hours)
An overnight outage presents the greatest risk for a planted aquarium.
Without electricity, filters stop circulating water, reducing oxygen available to the beneficial bacteria inside the filter media. Throughout the night, fish, plants, and bacteria continue consuming oxygen while no photosynthesis takes place to replace it. By morning, oxygen levels may be significantly lower, and waste compounds such as ammonia may begin accumulating if the biological filter has been stressed.
When power returns after an overnight interruption, your first priority should be restoring oxygen.
Increase surface agitation immediately to maximise gas exchange. Keep the CO2 system switched off for at least one hour after power is restored, allowing oxygen levels to recover before adding more carbon dioxide.
A small 10–15% water change using properly conditioned water can also help replenish dissolved oxygen while diluting any accumulated waste products.

CO2 Without Pressure: Using Liquid Carbon During the Monsoon
For aquariums that don't use a pressurised CO2 system, the monsoon is actually one of the best times to consider liquid carbon supplementation.
Although lower light levels reduce a plant's demand for carbon, they also slow overall growth and reduce oxygen production. These conditions can make planted aquariums more susceptible to algae and nutrient imbalances if plant health begins to decline.
